Kirkjufellsfossar Waterfall is one of the most photographed places in Iceland. Located close to the fjord of the same name, it offers a magical view that instantly immerses you in a Nordic fairytale. Although it is smaller than many other waterfalls in Iceland, its unique location among dramatic mountains and amazing atmosphere make this place a real treat.
Directly by the main road
Located close to the main road, the waterfall means there is no need for long hikes. Just park in the nearby car park and take a short walk to it. Pay 1000 ISK for a full day’s parking and there’s nothing stopping you from exploring this beautiful landscape. Along the way, you’ll have a breathtaking view of the two mountains that complete the backdrop of the waterfall.
As you cross the bridge that leads over the waterfall, you’ll get a view that is often featured in paintings and postcards from Iceland.
Kirkjufellsfossar waterfall is smaller but extremely photogenic. It consists of several streams of water cascading down the black volcanic rocks. Instead of having a uniform shape, the waterfall’s streams branch off and flow in different directions.
Mountains that complete the picture
Behind the waterfall stands a mountain with jagged peaks, rising majestically as if shielding the area from prying eyes. The dark and dramatic mountain, with its crevasses and precipices, enhances the wildness of the landscape. Meanwhile, in front of the waterfall lies a conical hill that contrasts the rugged backdrop with its harmonious and peaceful appearance. Interestingly, this hill, more so than the waterfall, serves as the true landmark of the location, effortlessly drawing the eye.
Kirkjufellsfossar as a film set
With its beauty, the waterfall attracted even filmmakers. It was featured in several scenes of Game of Thrones, specifically in season 7. Kirkjufell Mountain was depicted as “Arrowhead Mountain”, which the characters associated with one of the key locations beyond the North Wall.
Serving as a backdrop for scenes where Jon Snow and his group faced dangers in the snowy and icy landscape, this location beautifully emphasized the mystical atmosphere of Kirkjufellsfoss. Moreover, its connection to the rugged Nordic environment perfectly aligned with the dark world of Westeros.
Aurora borealis over a waterfall
During the clear winter nights, when the Northern Lights dance in the sky, the waterfall reveals its greatest magic. Together, the mountains and the waterfall create the perfect backdrop, and if you’re lucky enough to see this natural phenomenon above, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Kirkjufellsfossar waterfall can be found on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This whole peninsula is magical and you should definitely take the 57 and then the 574 circular route. In addition to waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, canyons and even seals await you here
