Konnos beach – experience of a lifetime
24. September 2024Sorobon Beach – completely different Bonaire
Sorobon Beach on the east coast of Bonaire is completely different from most beaches on the island. While the west coast offers deep waters and reefs ideal for diving, here you’ll be greeted by a shallow turquoise lagoon with fine white sand. However, the beach has one catch – the wind. It makes it ideal for windsurfing, but lying on the sand is almost impossible.

The journey itself is an experience
Sorobon Beach is approximately 15 minutes from the main town. Just follow the Kaya IR road. Randolf Statius van Eps, which will lead you directly to the beach. Well, not exactly. In fact, you will have several stops along the way.
Thanks to the wind, part of the sea regularly spills out, creating ideal conditions for flamingos. Along the way, you’ll pass about 5 kilometres of water where you can admire these magnificent creatures. You can watch them catching small fish, sleeping, and even flying.

Animals all around you
In addition to flamingos, donkeys are also frequent “hitchhikers”. We met several of them along the way. They were curious, came right up to the car and let us pet them. That is, until they decided to block the road.

Some of them even wanted to get in our car. 😊

You can also meet piglets from a nearby farm. They were walking happily along the road, not letting anyone disturb them.
The views were also beautiful, but we probably appreciated more the unexpected safari that the road prepared for us.

View of Sorobon Beach
When you finally arrive at the beach, park your car at Sorobon Beach Resort or at the public part of the beach. However, don’t head straight to the beach, but to the viewpoint you’ll see once you’re in the parking lot.
From the viewpoint you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire bay and the colour of the sea, which you would not expect on Bonaire.

Directly below the viewpoint, there are several unorganized beaches that are completely empty. And there’s a reason for that. The wind is so strong that you’re unable to safely put your stuff ashore – it will blow it away. As tempting as the idea of being on deserted white sand was, we didn’t last a minute on it. So we headed to the organised section, where you can rent sunbeds for €15 a day.
Beach like a fairy tale
On the organized part, you will find a couple of sun loungers and one bar. You’ll need to wedge your stuff between them so it doesn’t fly all over the beach, and you can go exploring. The water here is shallow dozens of feet from shore, so you can walk peacefully in the crystal clear lagoon and enjoy the warm, calm Caribbean Sea.

Be careful of the corals, though. There are no-walking signs both in the sea and at the entrance. Observe them. They border the coral reefs that are all around you. In the sea, stay in the turquoise part. If you get blown onto the coral while swimming, the water is shallow and you will be able to stand on your feet. Plus, the lifeguards take great care that no one leaves the restricted area.
There was hardly anyone on the beach except us, and there were only a few people in the sea. If it wasn’t for the wind, the beach is one of the most beautiful we have ever been to. However, due to the conditions, we didn’t stay long, only about three hours.
Whether you come for a short stopover or spend the whole day here, Sorobon will show you a completely different side of Bonaire – a sandy paradise in the middle of a blue lagoon. And if you too experience strong winds, you can head to Lac Cai Beach on the other side of the bay, where it’s hardly windy at all.
Sorobon – windsurfing paradise
With constant wind and shallow water, Sorobon Beach is one of the best windsurfing spots in the Caribbean. There are several windsurfing schools along the beach where you can rent equipment or learn the basics of the sport.
