29. October 2024Secret Lagoon – Reward for a busy day
Secret Lagoon, or “Gamla Laugin,” is one of the oldest thermal baths in Iceland. Here you will find natural hot springs that attract visitors with their authentic atmosphere. Although the colour of the water is not as blue as in Blue Lagoon or Myvatn, its location right on the Golden Circle and its low price attract you to a well-deserved rest after a busy day.
Secret Lagoon area
Inside, there’s only one swimming pool, however, it’s quite spacious. The water is pleasantly warm, ranging from 38 to 40 °C. Yet, I initially found it a bit chilly . Admittedly, I had hoped it would warm me up a bit more, but honestly, I’m probably not the best judge when it comes to water temperature.
As you approach the edge of the pool, the water gets hotter. That’s why there are warnings all around the edges so you don’t burn yourself.
There is even an outdoor play area with a slide for children, but it is rather impractical due to the weather.
Small geysers are visible around the Secret Lagoon, erupting every few minutes to create a unique spectacle. While they are smaller than Strokkur, their proximity and frequent activity add to the charm of the place. You can watch them directly from the pool.
You’ll also find simple indoor changing rooms and showers that keep the place feeling authentic. Unlike more expensive spas, however, there is no sauna.
Romantic sunset
Recommended time to visit is in the evening when you finish the tour. Sunsets at Secret Lagoon are magical and give the place a romantic atmosphere. Treat yourself to a chilled wine and enjoy the heavenly spectacle.
You won’t want to leave. As the warm water relaxes your muscles, you can reflect on the day that is far from over.
Admission fee and time
If you are travelling in the summer, you need to buy your ticket in advance, as the lagoon is very popular. However, if you are travelling out of season (October to May), you only need to buy your ticket a few hours in advance. The ticket price is 3900 ISK (25 €). For seniors it is discounted to 3000 ISK (about 20 €), while children under 14 years old get in for free. Included in the price is access to the pool, as well as use of the changing rooms and showers. Towel and swimsuit rentals are available for an additional fee, around €10.
Don’t forget to pack your flip-flops. The area is beautiful, but the ground is icy. You won’t be able to explore the hidden corners without shoes. We hadn’t thought of that and unfortunately, we missed them very much.
How to get to Secret Lagoon?
This thermal paradise is located in the town of Flúðir, only about a 30-minute drive from Gullfoss, 25 minutes from the Geyser and about 1.5 hours from Reykjavík, making it an ideal last stop on your Golden Circle tour.
Driving your own car is the best option. Free parking is available on-site. There are several accommodation options as well as restaurants waiting for you in the area, but they are quite expensive for Eastern European salaries.
