20. November 2024Saxhóll Crater – Climb to the top of the volcano
Saxhóll Crater is one of the most interesting geological formations on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and is a testament to Iceland’s volcanic history. Approximately 3 000 to 4 000 years ago, this basalt crater was formed when lava, gases and ash shot out of the ground and formed a perfectly symmetrical cone.
Saxhóll is fascinating at first sight with its shape, which rises above the surrounding landscape like a natural monument. From a distance it will attract your attention, just as it attracted ours.
Journey to the top
Park in the free car park and head up the 400 steps to discover its secrets. Especially because of the strong wind, which is an almost constant companion here, the stairs are quite challenging. It may take you 10-15 minutes to climb them.
Even on the way, you will have a view that you couldn’t fully perceive from the car. No man’s land – that’s how one could describe the first view that Saxhóll offered us. All we could see were black lava formations covered in green moss. In the distance, we could see the ocean, but even so, the landscape looked desolate, as if devoid of life.
Unbelievable views
When you reach the top, the wind will blow hard against you. Count on it. Nothing will protect you anymore. Here, first, he’ll offer you a glimpse into his depths. Covered with volcanic gravel and stones in various shades of black, brown and orange, the surface of the crater is almost surreal. Behind you, hints of the majestic Snæfellsjökull Glacier appear.
But that’s not all. If you continue along the trail, you will pass a crater. This will allow you to see a different form of the barren landscape which, in October, had a yellow hue.
Don’t be afraid to move on. From the north side, it offers a whole new view. You can see brown fields with mountains and the whistle of the wind that prevents you from approaching the crater edge. Watch out for that wind. It was actually very strong.
Also interesting is the map of the area, which shows you where everything is located.
You will find only minimal vegetation around you, which adds to the feeling that you are on another planet. From the top of the crater, you have a panoramic view of the entire Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which includes flat lava fields, coastal cliffs and the majestic Snæfellsjökull Glacier on the horizon.
How to get here?
Saxhóll is located at the western end of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, about a 2-hour drive from Borgarnes, 40 minutes from Kirkjufellsfossar Waterfall. If you’re coming from the north, just follow the 574 road, known as Snæfellsnesvegur, which circles the peninsula. From the road, the crater is clearly visible and marked. But we definitely recommend you make a detour around the Snæfellsnes peninsula. You will be delighted.
