Aruba’s capital, Oranjestad, welcomes you with its pastel facades, colonial architecture and bustling atmosphere. Although it’s a small city, it hides a number of interesting places. From historic buildings to shopping areas to the coastal promenade where you can stroll along the Caribbean Sea. Whether you’re looking for cultural experiences, shopping or just a place to enjoy the local atmosphere, Oranjestad will not disappoint.

Harbour and promenade
If you want to enjoy the sea view, head to Linear Park! A coastal promenade that runs along the harbour and is ideal for a short stroll. You will already be captivated by the harbour itself. Luxury cruise ships and flamingo statues add to its atmosphere.

If you continue along the promenade, you will reach the Renaissance Hotel and the shopping centre, which have their own inner harbour. Boats can come here to the hotel reception or directly to the shopping centre.

A little further on, the famous “I ❤️ Aruba” sign is sure to catch your eye and is a popular spot for photos and a reminder of your holiday.

On the very opposite side of the harbour, in Plaza Turismo, you’ll find a stunning sign with the Aruba motif.

Historic Centre
Walking through the centre of Oranjestad is like a journey back in time – the streets are lined with Dutch colonial buildings, but instead of the typical red brick you’ll find subtle shades of pink, turquoise or yellow. These pastel facades give the town an unmistakable charm and make it one of the most photogenic places on the island.

One of the most beautiful buildings in the city is the Orange Palace (Fort Zoutman) – the oldest building on the island, built in 1798 to protect Aruba from pirates. Today it houses the Aruba Historical Museum, where you can learn more about the island’s original inhabitants, the colonial era and how Aruba became one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations.
The National Archaeological Museum is equally wonderful. Near the fort, you’ll find the William III Tower, which was built in 1868 as a lighthouse and now serves as a bell tower. Its only problem is the opening hours. Both museums close awfully early, and if you’d like to come see them, you’ll have to skip the beach, which is very difficult in Aruba.

Shopping malls in Oranjestad
Oranjestad is the best place to shop in all of Aruba. It is located on Caya G. F. Betico Croes, where you will find boutiques selling clothing, souvenirs and luxury goods. If you’re looking for designer fashion, perfume or jewelry, head to the Renaissance Mall, one of the most luxurious shopping malls on the island. Here you’ll find stores such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Cartier, as well as smaller boutiques selling local products.
