The capital of Bonaire, Kralendijk, welcomes you with its laid-back atmosphere, pastel-coloured house facades and views of the turquoise sea, which is lined with yachts at anchor. Despite being the largest city on the island, don’t expect bustling life or skyscrapers – Kralendijk has retained its original Caribbean charm and its streets are filled with tranquillity and paintings, mostly of flamingos.

Town Centre – Colonial buildings and shops
A stroll through the centre of Kralendijk will show you the colourful Dutch colonial-style houses, many of which now serve as shops, restaurants or museums. On the main street, Kaya Grandi, you’ll find souvenir and clothing shops.

Restaurants line the alley around the harbour, so you can have lunch or dinner overlooking the sea.

Signs “Bonaire” and view of Klein Bonaire
Want to take a typical photo of Bonaire? Then don’t miss the big sign “Bonaire”, which you will find near the harbour. From here you will also get a beautiful view of the islet of Klein Bonaire, a real underwater gem.

Cruise ships and small fishing boats are moored in the harbour. And the seafront promenade is ideal for a romantic evening stroll at sunset.

Fort Oranje – Guardian of the past
One of the city’s historical landmarks is Fort Oranje, built in 1639 by the Dutch to protect against pirates. Today, the fort is no longer used for defence, but its yellow tower with a lighthouse still stands as a reminder of the past.
The fortress is a good starting point for discovering Bonaire’s history. There is also a government building nearby and the old salt warehouses, which once played a key role in the island’s economy.
