Corfu – family holiday
8. August 2020Mount Ainos
12. August 2020Karavomilos Lake - a lake full of peculiarities
Lake Karavomilos is strategically located for all tourists. It is 1 kilometer from Melissani Cave and also 1 kilometer from the town of Sami, where you will find both the beautiful Beach of Antisamos and the ancient Acropolis. According to scientists, Karavomylos is part of the strange geological phenomena observed in Kefalonia. In fact, freshwater flows underground from Argostoli to the lake in the Melissani cave, from where it continues here. It is less than 80 metres from the sea.
The lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, including dense pine forests, cypress, and olive trees that cover the surrounding hillsides and create a green backdrop for the calm waters and mirror-like surface. The lake's tranquil atmosphere makes it an ideal place for peaceful walks, picnics and enjoying nature. The bottom of the lake is made up of seaweed, which creates its typical colour.
The surrounding wetlands provide vital habitat for a variety of bird species, including herons and ducks, as well as rare aquatic plants and freshwater fish. Birdwatchers and nature lovers alike can enjoy spotting the diverse animals that call the lake home.
Its proximity to the Melissani Cave makes it an ideal stop to enjoy lunch at the Karavomilos Taverna Restaurant overlooking the sea or the lake. Martin, who doesn't much like Musaka, was delighted to taste it here. The large selection of vegetable dishes made me happy and the kids pleased at the Gyros pita as they do almost every day for lunch.
There is plenty of parking in the surrounding area, as well as plenty of opportunities for a walk. We were just hungry and the kids were looking forward to the beach so we just enjoyed the view, ate and continued to go swimming.
