12. August 2020Drogarati Cave - Concert Hall
The Drogarati Cave is a beautiful limestone cave that was formed millions of years ago by the gradual process of water erosion. The inside of the cave is just amazing. It's decorated with loads of stalactites and stalagmites, which were formed over thousands of years from mineral sediments flowing down from the cave ceiling.
Concert Hall
The most important point of the Drogarati Cave is its huge central chamber, which measures approximately 65 metres in length, 45 metres in width and 20 metres in height. In this vast space, you will find all forms of geological formations. The cathedral-like atmosphere is sure to impress you and, like us, you will be left in awe of how powerful nature is. This particular room is known as the Concert Hall. The natural construction of the cave amplifies sound and creates resonance, which has made the cave a popular venue for concerts and musical performances.
Drogarati Cave across time
The Drogarati Cave has a rich history that goes back thousands of years. According to speleologists, it is more than 100 million years old. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of human occupation in the cave, including pottery shards and other artefacts from the Neolithic and Palaeolithic periods. The protected interior of the cave probably provided shelter for prehistoric people seeking protection from the elements.
Today, Drogarati Cave welcomes visitors from all over the world who come to admire its natural beauty and explore its fascinating depths. The tour will lead you along illuminated paths and allow you to admire the geological formations of the cave up close. By the time you reach the Concert Hall, you will have them all over the place along the way.
How to get here?
The cave has a large parking lot and is easily accessible. I recommend combining a visit with a stop at Gerasimos Monastery, which is only a 20-minute drive away. After buying tickets, you go to the cave on your own and it's up to you how long you stay. It's not large in size, but standing on the stone platform and testing the power of the sound will take some time. Especially when you have curious kids with you. The price was also very friendly and we paid 16€ for the whole family.
If you're planning a visit to the Melissani Cave, you've got to check out the Drogarati Cave too! They're just nine minutes apart by car, and each one offers a totally different experience. You've got to check out the echo and acoustics for yourself. Have fun! Stand on the stage and start talking or singing out loud.
