Djúpivogur, a quaint harbour town on Iceland’s east coast, greets you with its distinct charm and calming vibe. As you make your way around Iceland, this is the perfect spot to pause, unwind, and recharge. Here, you can sip a great cup of coffee while gazing out over the breathtaking fjords. Conveniently located along the Ring Road, it’s an easy and worthwhile stop just down the road.
Why visit Djúpivogur?
Djúpivogur’s rich history stretches back to the 16th century when it flourished as a bustling trading hub. A lasting testament to this past is Langabúð, a beautifully preserved wooden warehouse dating from 1790. Today, this historic building serves as more than just a memory of bygone days – it has transformed into a museum, café, and cultural centre. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the region’s history and admire the creations of local artists, blending past and present in a charming setting.
This charming building not only offers a delightful view but also gives visitors the chance to enjoy a warm coffee or hearty soup at reasonable prices. Inside, one half of the structure serves as a cozy restaurant, while the other half invites you to explore a captivating museum. So, as you wait for your coffee or meal, feel free to wander through the museum’s exhibits and immerse yourself in the history and culture of the area.
Nature at your fingertips
Djúpivogur is surrounded by a dramatic landscape where you will be enchanted by fjords, mountains and wild coastline. Perfect for birdwatching. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of seals or whales at sea. Unfortunately, we had no luck.
It feels as if time has stood still with the wooden houses in the town. They evoke a fairytale atmosphere and invite you to take a walk among them.
How much time to spend here?
Djúpivogur may be a small town, but whether you choose to stay for just an hour or spend the whole day, it’s entirely up to you. However, if you’re traveling along the Ring Road, it’s a stop you shouldn’t miss. In fact, if you’re driving from Stokksnes, Djúpivogur is conveniently located just 1.5 hours away, making it the perfect place to take a break and recharge.
And if you’re heading on to Egilsstaðir or Hengifoss Waterfall, make sure you take Route 939 instead of Route 1. You’re in for a truly remarkable scenic drive.
