On a rocky outcrop on the northern coast of Aruba, the California Lighthouse, one of the island’s most famous sites, rises majestically. You can’t miss it from a distance – the tall white tower contrasts with the wild, almost desert landscape, where the wind plays with the sand and cacti. You will be mesmerised by the view from here, especially at sunset, when the horizon turns orange and pink.

Aruba’s oldest lighthouse
Known as the California Lighthouse, it is the oldest lighthouse on the island. You can easily get here by car, as a paved road leads directly to it. It is named after the steamship California, which was wrecked here in 1891. After the accident, the local authorities decided to build a lighthouse that still helps ships navigate safely in these waters.
From the ground, the lighthouse already looks majestic and promises unforgettable views. For approx. 5 € you can climb the stairs to the upper viewing platform. Below the lighthouse, they will offer you drone videos with the view as well, but they were quite expensive for us. As well as everything else. I bought the most expensive coconut in my life at the bus bar, for €8.

Panoramic views
Its biggest attraction is the 360-degree panoramic view. If you climb the stairs to the top, the endless ocean opens up before you. You can watch Arashi Beach and the sun slowly setting over the horizon, which is truly breathtaking.

But also the greens of the Tierra del Sol Golf Course and Oranjestad in the distance. Aruba really is a small island, and from the lighthouse, you’ll have it in the palm of your hand.

Meanwhile, the north coast offers views of waves crashing against the cliffs. Near the lighthouse, you will also notice the sand dunes that create a unique landscape. If you like unusual scenery, be sure to stop here for a while and let the beauty of nature carry you away.

How to get to the California Lighthouse?
If you’re driving from Arashi Beach to California Lighthouse, it will take you approximately 5 minutes by car. Once you exit the parking lot, stay on the main road heading north. You can see the lighthouse from a distance, so it’s easy to find.
If you are travelling from the capital Oranjestad, it takes about 20 minutes by car. Head north along the main road and follow the signs to the California Lighthouse. Alternatively, you can take the bus tour to the lighthouse.
