29. October 2024Brúarfoss Waterfall: the most beautiful blue
Brúarfoss is a hidden gem of the Golden Circle, whose blue water creates a beautiful contrast with the surrounding basalt rocks. Famous for its brilliant blue water, this stunning waterfall flows through a series of cascades and channels, creating a breathtaking sight against the backdrop of the rugged landscape. And you’ve got it on the way if you go to see the geysers.
After a short (or longer) hike, you will have a view of the bridge under which the azure blue river makes its way. After walking a few steps, you’ll be enchanted by the sight of the waterfall cascading in a series of steps, its stunning blue colour its most striking feature. Its unique colour is created by the glacial water flowing down the river, creating a stunning contrast with the black volcanic rock.
Individual viewpoints
Our steps led us first to the bridge, from which we had a view of the entire cascade. We admired the peaceful atmosphere of the place, which makes you relax whether you are in a hurry or not. While the water on the rocks looks as white as snow, when the individual streams come together, only the Caribbean blue hits your eyes.
You can also see the Brúarfoss Waterfall from below. Both banks of the river allow you to walk along and experience how cold the water is. It is completely icy . At the same time, you will see an even greater contrast between the black rocks, the blue water and the ice crystals that are gradually forming here.
For the adventurous, there is one more vantage point – tall rock on the other side of the bridge. It offers a fabulous view of the river, the bridge and the waterfall in the background. This view will forever be etched in my memory.
Unforgettable beauty
This small waterfall will show you one of the most beautiful aspects of Iceland and provide a great opportunity for a peaceful moment in the lap of nature. And for us, it has definitely become one of the most beautiful we have seen in Iceland, if not overall.
One thing to note is that Brúarfoss is not as well known as some of the other waterfalls in Iceland, which means it can be less crowded, thus allowing for a more tranquil experience. Just remember to respect the natural environment and stay on the marked paths to preserve the beauty of the area.
How to get to Brúarfoss Waterfall?
Brúarfoss Waterfall is no longer on the itineraries of organised tours, so it’s best to get here by rented car.
There are two parking options to choose from. Remote parking is free of charge. You start in a small parking lot along Route 37. Parking is free and from there you will take a scenic hike. It is roughly a 3 kilometre hike to the waterfall and will take about 30 to 40 minutes one way. If you don’t have enough time, continue on the unpaved road until you reach the paid parking area. It costs 1000 ISK and the walk from there to the waterfall is about 5 minutes.
Waterfall lies on the road from Thingvellir to Geysers and Godafoss waterfall.
