The most beautiful beaches of Cyprus
29. September 2024Blue Lagoon: the most beautiful beach in Western Cyprus
Blue Lagoon is located in Akamas National Park on the northwest coast of Cyprus. For us, it’s one of the island’s greatest natural gems, and not just for its clear water that plays with rich shades of blue and turquoise. It’s a place where one really finds peace away from the busy tourist areas.

Although the beach is not a beach in the true sense of the word – it offers only a narrow strip of black sand to lie on – this imperfection gives it a special charm. If you don’t come here by boat, be prepared to sit on the rocks. But that doesn’t matter at all, because most people arrive here by boat, so there’s always a place to relax on this mini beach too.

Why visit Blue Lagoon?
The surrounding area of the beach is lined with white rocks, which are characteristic of the area. The cliffs are made up of soft limestone stone, which gives them their bright colour. You can walk around them and discover small coves and rocky niches where small pools of seawater are formed. The location of the beach is also ideal for watching the sunset, especially from the western part of the cliffs. Although we didn’t manage to make it back here, the sunset would definitely be spectacular.

This lagoon is surrounded by the wild and untouched nature of the Akamas National Park, where you can discover the rich flora and fauna that are unique to this area. The azure waters of the lagoon combined with the rugged cliffs and greenery of the surrounding area will literally mesmerise you. We could hardly tear ourselves away from this magnificent view and stayed here considerably longer.
The water here is extremely clear, so you can see every detail under the surface, from small fish to coral. Snorkelling here was absolutely magical for us as we discovered the underwater world right before our eyes.
A paradise for older children
Shallow water and no waves are ideal conditions for swimming with children. Ours were splashing, snorkeling and enjoying the shallow water. We couldn’t get them off the beach. Usually, they get bored in the sea after an hour, but not here. The boat that was like a bar was actually playing loud music and they treated it like one big sea party. Because of that, for them, this beach was the most beautiful.
Most of the lagoon is shallow, which is great for walking on the seabed. If you want to swim, you can head towards the island that close off the lagoon. You can even get to it if you step on the rocks properly. The other option is to swim above the crystal clear waters with the soft sand underfoot – an experience you won’t forget.
How to get here?
Organised boat trips depart from Paphos town as well as from Coral Beach and stop here as well. The other option is a boat trip from Latsi. Big boats stop here for about an hour and then move on. Another option is to rent an ATV and go explore Akamas Park. This way you will also see the hidden gem of Canyon Beach. But the road is extremely bad and under no circumstances try to get here in a regular car. You won’t make it through the large potholes in the road.
