8. September 2022Angelokastro - the most beautiful view on the island
Angelokastro, also known as Angel Castle, was built in the 13th century. Although it is more or less in ruins, its strategic location remains. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Ionian Sea, making it a popular destination for visitors.
History of the castle
Angelokastro Castle was built in the 13th century to defend against pirate raids and other threats. The castle's strategic location on a steep hill about 305 metres above sea level made it almost impregnable. Throughout history, it has served as a key defensive fortress of Corfu, protecting the islanders from raids from Africa or attacks by the Venetians.
Today you will find only ruins, an entrance gate and old warehouses. However, there is still a small chapel dedicated to the archangels Gabriel and Michael in a cave on the castle grounds. You can enter it from the courtyard, where you can sit in the shade of a large tree on a bench.
Viewpoint
However, the reason why Angelokastro is a popular tourist attraction lies not in its historical value, but in its stunning panoramic views on all sides.
To the south, you can enjoy views of the entire Paleokastritsa area, including the famous Agios Spiridon beach.
Directly below you is the secluded sand and stone Kastelli Beach, which can only be reached by boat. We visited it when we rented a boat and it is really worth a visit. It looks perfect from above, but it's also amazing to enjoy the sound of the sea chilling on it.
If you look towards the east, you'll be treated to a magnificent view of the island's vast forests and rolling hills, along with the intriguing remains of ancient walls.
How to get here
Access to Angelokastro is only possible by car, as there are no bus stops in the area. Park at the stalls selling spices and from there you will climb the stairs to the castle. Less than a 5-minute walk and you are in the courtyard and can explore the castle.
By car, you need to follow the directions to Paleokastritsa or the town of Makrades and then Angelokastro is already signposted. Or use Google Maps to guide you safely to your destination.
There were only 6 other people there at the time of our visit, which we really didn't expect. You probably won't find better views on the island. It is ideal to combine a visit to Angelokastro with the nearby beaches. Either in the form of a boat rental or by staying at one of the very crowded beaches of the area. Be prepared, however, that the beaches are small and are used not only by all visitors to the nearby hotels, but also by others who want to see the "most beautiful beach on the island" Agios Spiridon. For us, none of the beaches in this area that are accessible by car are worth a visit. However, we agree that the area has the most beautiful beaches like Kastellli or Chomi Beach. But you will only see them from the boat.
