25. September 2024Agios Spiridon Beach - the most famous beach
Agios Spiridon Beach, often referred to as Paleokastritsa Beach, is the island's most famous beach. It is connected to Agios Petros Beach, from which it is separated only by a parking lot. Agios Spiridon Beach offers clean fine sand, while Agios Petros is pebbly. However, both are small and narrow.
Why should you visit the beach?
Agios Spiridon Beach is a frequent destination for visitors, but unfortunately, its length and width cannot absorb so many people. Although it is organized, the supply of sunbeds and umbrellas is limited. They cost €30 per day and if you arrive after 10:00, none won't be available. Even though the sunbeds are next to each other, people who don't get a chance put their towels in every available gap so they can stay on the beach. In the summer months there is literally a fight for every inch of sand.
Why is the beach so popular? Because of the cliffs and caves that surround it. The best way to really enjoy the beach is to rent a pedal. You need to put your name on a waiting list and wait 2-3 hours for your turn. There are plenty of bikes, but there are also plenty of people trying to escape the masses and see what they came here for in the first place.
There are many caves and you can even enter some of them with a water bike. Other caves you have to swim into. There are rocks around the caves that you can stand on. Inside it is usually very shallow, but there are rocks underneath you, so it is advisable to have water shoes.
However, watch out for boats that have priority over swimmers, and there are plenty of them!
Why not?
You can also see the caves that line the beach from an organized boat trip or by your own rented boat. You don't have to start from the beach, you can start from the sea. This will save you a lot of stress and complications. If you really want to go to the beach, arrive before 9:00 am to make sure you don't miss an umbrella. You don't want to have only 50 cm of sand for 4 people if you can't make it.
Prepare for high prices in restaurants, lower quality and long waiting times for both tables and food. There is a wait for everything here. If you want a pedal, sort it out in advance or you won't get one.
Do not come here with small children. There are too many people here and you will have to keep an eye out nonstop.
How to get here?
Transportation to this beach is one of the easiest. There are buses from the capital, as well as organized trips from different parts of the island. The area offers a large parking lot. The only paid parking outside the capital can be found here.
