Konnos beach – experience of a lifetime
24. September 2024Watamula Hole – Wild Beauty of Curaçao
Watamula Hole is a place in the very north of the island where the raw beauty of nature meets the majesty of the ocean. From the moment you arrive, you will be amazed by the power and energy that emanates from this place. Rumbling waves crash against the rocky shoreline, and the geyser of water that gushes from a hole in the rock creates an unforgettable experience.

Natural Theatre
Watamula Hole is a natural rock hole through which air and water pulse upwards in rhythm with the beat of the ocean. When a bigger wave comes, the water gushes out with tremendous force, creating a natural geyser effect. This spectacle of nature is fascinating to watch and will leave a strong impression on you. The surrounding landscape looks inhospitable, reminiscent of a moonscape, which only enhances the experience and shows the incredible power of nature.
Unlike the popular beaches of Curaçao, you won’t find crowds of tourists here. Watamula is a secluded spot dominated by a wild coastline, sharp limestone cliffs and views of the endless ocean. Local vegetation is minimal, so be prepared for strong sun and winds that blow almost constantly.

How to get to Watamula Hole?
Watamula Hole is located on the northwest coast of Curaçao, near the village of Westpunt. Access is easy – just follow the signs and park in the parking lot. A bumpy unpaved road leads to the site, so a car with a higher chassis is ideal. If you don’t have one, you’ll walk the last 5 minutes or so as the dirt road is too rough.
You can combine your visit with one of the northern beaches such as Kleine Knip or Grote Knip.
From the car parking area, take a short walk on rocky terrain and don’t forget your sturdy shoes. The rocks are very sharp and stabbing. We really underestimated this with our flip-flops. Martin’s were ruined, and my every step hurt. Don’t make the same mistake!

What to be careful of?
- Safety first – Watamula Hole has no barriers or marked trails, so don’t get too close to the edge.
- Arrive early – at around 5:30 pm, the police came and said it was no longer safe to stay at Watamula Hole at this time. They also warned us about the frequent thefts around the parking lot, especially in the evening when no one watches the cars here anymore.
- Sun is intense here – there’s no shade, so bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
- Road here is slightly rough – if you come on a scooter or in a small car, be careful.
