25. October 2024What to see around Paphos?
Paphos is the centre of the western part of the island, which is easily accessible from most European cities. It often stands in the shadow of Larnaca, which is close to Ayia Napa, where you'll find the most beautiful beaches. While Paphos may not offer turquoise beaches with shallow water, it does offer a wealth of experiences, natural beauty and sights. Paphos as a city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is definitely worth seeing. Being a small town, you'll have covered it all in a day or two.
It's worth taking the car and driving around the whole area. There is no problem with parking in Paphos so you don't have to worry about that. And a car will definitely be appreciated when exploring the area, as not everywhere can be reached by public transport. For us, the area around Paphos stretches from Limassol through Olympos to Akamas Peninsula. As the nearest airport is the one in Paphos. This area offers a fascinating mix of history, natural beauty and recreational opportunities. It is an ideal destination for travellers looking for adventure, culture and relaxation.
What should you definitely not miss?
1. Blue Lagoon
1. Blue Lagoon
On the west coast in Akamas National Park is the beautiful Blue Lagoon Beach. It does not offer a beach in the traditional sense. You lie variously on rocks or small stretches of black sand. This lagoon is known for its incredibly clear water, which shimmers in different shades of blue and turquoise, thanks to the sun's rays. Be it by boat trip or a rented ATV, the beach is definitely worth a visit.

Many visitors make the mistake of only visiting the Blue Lagoon by boat and only seeing the Akamas from the sea. If you love secluded beaches and spectacular views and aren't afraid of adventure, consider a day trip to this amazing place. There are several options, but the easiest way is to rent an ATV and go solo. Hiking is quite challenging, and you'll lose a lot of time moving around.

The historical centre of Paphos is the place where the past meets the present. Walking through its narrow streets, you will see fascinating monuments that tell stories of ancient glory and myth. Among the most beautiful monuments are the Tombs of the Kings. Although they did not belong to kings, their grandeur and richness of decoration refer to the importance of the elite who were buried here. Also definitely worth a visit is the Archaeological Park, where you will find magnificent Roman mosaics, considered to be among the best preserved in the world.

Avakas Gorge is a dramatic canyon carved out of limestone cliffs that takes you into the heart of Akamas nature. The ideal time to visit is in the afternoon, after 4 pm, when temperatures are not as high. The hike is not strenuous, and the trail is approximately 3 kilometers long. In some parts, the canyon reaches up to several tens of meters high, and its narrow walls create a mysterious atmosphere. Although Cyprus is mostly about beautiful beaches, you should definitely make a stop at Avakas Gorge. You won't regret it.

6. Zapallo Beach
6. Zapallo Beach
Zapallo Beach is a beautiful bay consisting of two beaches. It lies a short distance from Limassol and offers fine sand, beautiful sea colour and complete seclusion. Apart from army helicopters and falcons circling over the cliffs, you will meet almost no one. However, this takes its toll. The beach is unorganised, and you have to make the 20-minute journey down the hill and then the arduous journey up. As the sun is very harsh, the walk back is quite exhausting.

Coral Beach can be found north of Paphos, the closest nice beach to the town. Offering fine sand and beautiful sea colours. Although the water is slightly colder than around Ayia Napa, it is still very pleasant.
However, there was also quite a bit of seaweed that we didn't find on other beaches. It was also quite crowded, but not too much, and there were free sun loungers even around lunchtime. Especially if you go to the southern part. The beach is ideal if you are near Paphos and looking for the best option where you can get quickly..
