25. October 2024Governor’s Beach – the pearl of the south
The magnificent Governor’s Beach is truly reminiscent of the breathtaking Scala dei Turchi. With its fine sand, calm sea, and stunning limestone cliffs, it’s the perfect spot to unwind. You can either relax on one of the two well-organised sections, or if you prefer a bit more seclusion, you can opt for one of the mini beaches tucked away between the cliffs.
Organisation of Governor’s Beach
Governor’s Beach is not only an incredible spot with two organised beaches, but it also features several smaller hideaways nestled among the rocks, perfect for anyone seeking a bit of privacy. We, in particular, opted for the back beach, which came equipped with umbrellas and lounge chairs. Moreover, it was a bit less crowded than the front beach. To our surprise, most of the umbrellas on both were unoccupied – even in the busy month of August!
An umbrella with two sun loungers costs €7.50, which is on par with other beaches in Cyprus. Plus, there’s a convenient bar offering a delightful selection of drinks and snacks. Each organized beach has its own bar, but don’t worry—it’s just a short stroll a few meters above the beach to get there. Interestingly, the prices here are even lower than those in the resort of Ayia Napa!
Moreover, if you’re in the mood for something more substantial, you’ll find a variety of charming restaurants and tavernas nearby where you can indulge in some fresh seafood.
White cliffs all around you
The surrounding area of the beach is lined with stunning white rocks, which are a signature of this picturesque locale. Additionally, the cliffs are composed of soft limestone, giving them their strikingly bright color. As you stroll around, you can discover charming small coves and rocky niches where tiny pools of seawater have formed. Furthermore, the beach’s location is simply ideal for watching the sunset, especially from the western part of the cliffs. Although we didn’t manage to make it back to witness it ourselves, there’s no doubt that the sunset here would be nothing short of spectacular!
Governor’s and its beauty
Governor’s Beach offers a summer idyll, complete with breathtaking scenery and fewer visitors. If you venture to the more westerly beach, you can meander past stunning cliffs and intriguing caves, leading you to a secluded spot. The water here reaches up to your waist at most, making it easy and safe to wade in with your belongings. While the beach may be tiny, it feels completely secluded, giving you the delightful impression of being on a desert island.
The stunning white cliffs surrounding you create a unique atmosphere, providing a perfect contrast to the dark brown sand and crystal-clear sea. Here, you’ll feel as if time has stood still, enveloped by the serene beauty of your surroundings.
You have the option to return to the organized section by sea or take a refreshing swim to explore the other side of the beach. Interestingly, this side presents a completely different experience.
The kids weren’t in the mood for walking anymore, so we let them fool around in the sea while we ventured to explore the other side ourselves. Honestly, it turned out to be the perfect decision! We felt as if we were on a romantic getaway, just the two of us. The rocks over there resembled something straight out of a fairy tale.
Beyond the second organized beach, a completely different world unfolds! Here, the sandy shores transition into dramatic cliffs, punctuated by small stretches of stunning white rocks. Nestled between each reef, you’ll find charming little beaches where you can sit back in the sand, letting the waves gently wash over you, or dive in for a refreshing swim.
This area instantly reminded us of Sicily and its famous Scala dei Turchi, but with a delightful twist! Here, the beach is not only nicer and sandier, but the sea is also warmer.
How to get here?
It is best to get around Cyprus by car, especially if you are a family with children. Google Maps took us directly to the parking lot in front of the beach, which was free by the way.
If you prefer buses, in Limassol look for bus 95 from Limassol Old Port or the main bus station. This bus will take you to the Zygi area, which is one of the closest towns to Governor’s Beach. However, you will need to take a taxi from there as there is no bus going directly to the beach.
From Larnaca, you can start your journey by taking bus 424 or 425 to Kofinou bus station. From Kofinou, as in the case of Limassol, you will need a taxi. The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
