8. September 2021Agios Nikolaos - a bustling town in the east
Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque coastal town on the northeast coast of Crete, known for its beautiful natural scenery, lively atmosphere and rich history. It is an ideal place for an evening stroll where you can enjoy the typical Mediterranean atmosphere. In addition to the many bars, restaurants and shops, it also attracts with its monuments.
How to get here?
Agios Nikolaos can be found on the western side of Mirabello Bay, one of the most beautiful bays in Crete. The town is approximately 65 km east of Heraklion, the island's capital, and is easily accessible by car or bus. The journey from Heraklion International Airport takes approximately one hour by car.
Lake Voulismeni
The town's biggest attraction is Lake Voulismeni, which is located right next to the historic centre and is surrounded by cafes, restaurants and shops. Legend has it that the lake is bottomless and, according to local folklore, was associated with the goddess Athena, who bathed in it.
Here you can enjoy a pleasant stroll along the waterfront promenade surrounding the lake and enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings. You also have the opportunity to take a boat trip on the lake. This option allows you to experience the lake from a different perspective and enjoy the romantic atmosphere. We visited the lake with our children who were expecting the hustle and bustle of the city and not the calm surface of the lake.
The lake has the most beautiful atmosphere at sunset and at night, when the lights of the whole town gradually emerge, reflecting off the calm surface. Indulging in dinner at one of the local tavernas will allow you to soak up the splendour of the place even more.
Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos
This museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts from eastern Crete dating from the Neolithic period to the end of the Roman era. Highlights include Minoan pottery, ancient weapons and jewellery, giving an insight into the region's rich history. It is not as large as that of Heraklion, which may suit someone.
Spinalonga Island
A short boat trip from Agios Nikolaos will take you to the island of Spinalonga, famous for its Venetian fortress and later as a leper colony. Organised excursions leave from the harbour every day and offer you the opportunity to learn more about the history of the place.
Ideal starting point for trips around the area
When you want to explore the eastern part of the island, you should stay near Agios Nikolaos. Roads lead in all directions. Whether you want to go see the caves of Vreiko or Psychro, or you will be tempted by the beaches in the east of Voulisma or Vai beach, from where you can reach it by the main roads. Also worth mentioning are the Ha Gorge or Richtis canyons, which can also be found in the east of the island.
