12. August 2020Assos - a place where nature and man are intertwined
Assos, located on the northwest coast of the island, is a charming historic village known for its picturesque, peaceful atmosphere and rich cultural heritage. In addition, there is a fortress of the same name, which offers panoramic views of the whole area.
Situated in a narrow pass between two pristine bays, the fortress offers panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding coastline. The village is surrounded by lush green hillsides, which create a beautiful backdrop for the colourful houses and coastal promenade.
History of the place
Assos has a rich history that dates back to antiquity. The village was originally founded by the ancient Mycenaeans and later served as a strategic base for various civilizations, including the Venetians and the Ottomans. Today, visitors can explore the historic streets, ancient ruins and the well-preserved Venetian fortress that rises above the village from a rocky outcrop.
The fortress of Assos was built by the Venetians in the 16th century during their rule over the island of Kefalonia. Its construction was part of a network of fortifications designed to protect against pirate raids and Ottoman invasions. The fortress enjoys an excellent location overlooking the village of Assos and the surrounding coastline. Its elevated position gave the defenders a clear view of approaching enemy ships, making it an important defensive fortress for the Venetians.
The fortress is characterised by its sturdy stone walls, bastions, and watchtowers, which were built using traditional Venetian military techniques. Throughout its history, the fortress of Assos has played a key role in the defence of Kefalonia and the surrounding region. It has witnessed many conflicts and battles, including clashes between the Venetians, the Ottoman Turks and other rival powers fighting for control of the strategic Ionian Sea.
The most beautiful sunsets
What you can't miss is the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and coastline. You can climb to the top of the ramparts and enjoy an expansive view of the Ionian Sea, the neighbouring islands and the picturesque village of Assos below you. The most beautiful views are at sunset, when you can watch the sun slowly sink into the sea. This breathtaking scenery attracts many local and international couples, who you can meet here in the evening. The combination of the fortress, the cliff and the sky with all the colours of the rainbow running through it creates a unique atmosphere that is not to be missed.
The parking lot, which is right next to the fort, is large enough and we had no problem finding a parking space.
As Assos is a short walk from Myrtos Beach, you can stop here on your way back from the beach. You can visit the fortress at any time. Arriving in the evening to catch the sunset is the best option.
