25. September 2024Monastery Paleokastritsa - greenery and views
The Paleokastritsa Monastery is perched on a hill above the bay, offering stunning views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. It was built in 1225, but most of the buildings you see today are from the 18th century. The monastery complex is built in the traditional Byzantine style. As you approach the entrance, you'll be drawn to the tunnel you have to go through.
The gardens are beautiful, too. They have lots of different plants that really bring the atmosphere to life. Kids will love having a go at ringing the bell with the hammer.
There is also a religious museum, which displays religious artefacts, manuscripts and historical objects related to the monastery's past. Especially the collection of old books is impressive.
Paleokastritsa Monastery is just a 1km above Agios Spiridon Beach. If you decide to visit this beach, be sure to check out the monastery as well. The peace and tranquility you'll find here will be a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the beach. You can also enjoy great views of the whole area from the drive, including some hidden lagoons.
If you're not planning to visit the area, it's probably best to skip the monastery too. It's a nice place, but not really worth making a long trip for. You might want to combine a visit with a stay at the nearby beaches, which you should visit by boat, like Chomi or Kastelli. The beaches you can get to by car are pretty crowded.
