6. August 2021Ancient Krani and Cyclopean walls
Ancient Krani, located a short distance from Argostoli, is an archaeological site rich in history and cultural significance. It is believed that people lived here already in the Mycenaean period, around the 2nd millennium BC. Over the centuries, the settlement developed and grew in importance, becoming an important urban centre in the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
Despite its importance to Kefalonia, tourists don't usually come here, so you'll be surrounded by nature, history and not much else.
What you'll see here
The remains of ancient Krani include various archaeological features such as fortified walls, public buildings, residential areas and religious structures. Excavations at the site have revealed evidence of a thriving community with artefacts ranging from pottery and coins to inscriptions and architectural fragments.
One of the most striking features of ancient Krani is the Acropolis, a fortified citadel located on top of a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. The Acropolis served as the administrative and military centre of the settlement and provided strategic advantages in the defence and control of the region. The biggest attraction is the Cyclopean walls from the 6th. century, which formed the Acropolis.
The term "Cyclops" is derived from Greek mythology, where the Cyclops were legendary creatures known for their strength and power. According to ancient Greek tradition, the Cyclopes were credited with building structures of immense size and strength, hence the association with the massive stone blocks used in Cyclopean masonry.
Despite the dense vegetation, you can't miss the Cyclops walls. They are pushing their way through the bushes and forging their way so that we can admire them after all these years. They are mute witnesses to the skill of ancient builders, which we still do not fully understand. Along the way, you will be accompanied by information boards that will tell you more about Krani and its sights.
In addition to its historical significance, ancient Krani offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside with expansive views of the sea.
How to get here?
The road here leads through the village of Razata from which you follow the road past a small church. Gradually the road turns to unpaved and at the end you can see a small farm. You park your car right here and just follow the signs that will lead you to the walls. The walk is short and you won't stay here more than 1-2 hours even while sightseeing. Ancient Krani has no opening hours. You can come here at any time and enjoy the works of ancient times for free. The information boards you come across along the way will help you to do this.
Krani is only 13 minutes by car from Agrostoli and 18 minutes from Makris Gialos Beach.
